Reactivity with Alternate Methods

"HTLA" antibodies will demonstrate differently when using gel column (gel) or solid phase red cell adherance (solid phase) methodologies than they do in a test tube.
  • An "HTLA" antibody typically will not demonstrate reactivity when testing in solid phase. This is due to the membranes on the solid phase plates containing azide, which prevents the antibodies from adhering strongly enough to remain bound to red cell antigens during the wash phase.
    • If your facility has access to solid phase testing, this is a convenient shortcut to resolving these cases.
  • In contrast, an "HTLA" antibody resembles a stronger reactivity pattern like the below panel when testing in gel due to the increased sensitivity of the methodology:
