Independent study or self-study is a learning method in which an individual participates in an educational activity with little or no supervision. The topic or activity is agreed upon or assigned by the teacher. This method is used for independent research and may involve a specific topic of interest not covered in the academic curriculum. Whether hands-on in a laboratory environment or written, research projects may be categorized as independent study. Instructors or facilitators will be involved, provide ongoing guidance as needed, and serve as the evaluator for the project.
