Tools for Direct Learning Methods: Demonstration

A third teacher-centered teaching tool is a demonstration. Preparation for a demonstration is similar to that of a lecture.
  1. Select a topic for a demonstration
  2. Create a series of stepwise instructions and a list of required equipment
  3. Gather equipment before the class session
  4. At the beginning of the demonstration, the teacher may engage the class in a discussion to predict the expected outcome
  5. The instructor should ensure that all students are positioned to visualize the demonstration clearly.
  6. After the demonstration, students should reflect on the outcome. The discussion may be conducted in small groups, culminating with a large group discussion, or collectively in a large group.
  7. The teacher should summarize the entire experience with feedback at the end of the class session.
