Overview of Histone Modifications

1. Methylation of DNA and histones causes nucleosomes to pack tightly together. For instance, transcription factors cannot bind the DNA, and genes are not expressed.
2. Histone acetylation results in loose packing of nucleosomes. The transcription factors can then bind to the DNA and genes are expressed.
