Respiratory Acidosis

Recall that respiratory acidosis results from a decrease in the elimination of CO2 from the lungs due to a decrease in alveolar ventilation.
The following conditions can result in respiratory acidosis:
  • emphysema
  • chronic bronchitis
  • meningitis
  • sedative drugs (e.g., narcotics, barbituates)
  • rebreathing air (such as into a paper bag)
