Nonrespiratory/Metabolic Alkalosis

Remember that nonrespiratory/metabolic alkalosis results from either a gain of bicarbonate or a loss of acidic fluids. The following disease states or physical conditions can result in metabolic alkalosis:
  • vomiting (loss of acidic fluids, i.e., HCl)
  • gastric suction
  • prolonged diuretic use
  • excess ingestion of alkali (antacids)
