Donors with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or similar clotting factor disorders and deficiencies that require treatment with clotting factor concentrates are deferred indefinitely for their safety and for the efficacy of the product being donated to a recipient who needs it.
Donors with von Willebrand disease are generally deferred but may be permitted to donate if their disease is mild and they have no history of bleeding.
Other bleeding conditions or blood diseases may be qualified for or deferred from donating based on the donor center's standard operating procedure (SOP) for evaluating donor safety.
Note: Individuals with a Factor XII deficiency are an exception to this deferral, as it is associated with abnormal clotting, not bleeding.
