Bone Marrow Procurement: Supplies

The practitioner who is performing the procedure discusses the procedure with the patient, explaining why it is necessary and then obtains an informed consent. Sedation is administered, if ordered, and an assessment of the patient's anatomy is performed.
Sterile technique is maintained while obtaining a bone marrow biopsy. Common items used for collection may be included on a "bone marrow tray" that is sterilized. A list of items on the tray may include, but is not limited to:
  • Bone marrow biopsy needle
  • Bone marrow aspiration needle
  • Syringes for administering lidocaine and for collection of the aspirate
  • Scalpel
  • Slides
  • Gauze
