Question #41: Babesia

YesNo
Have you EVER
41. Had a positive test result for Babesia?
Donors may not be asked about their Babesia history if all product donations are tested for Babesia or pathogen reduced with an FDA-approved method. Nucleic acid testing for Babesia is required for blood products collected in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C.
In states where testing or pathogen reduction is not performed, donors should be asked if they have ever had a positive test result for Babesia. Donors who answer yes, or test positive for Babesia during the post-donation testing process, are deferred for 2 years following their most recent positive result and must have a nonreactive test for Babesia before they are eligible to donate again.
