Question #31: Injectable HIV Prevention

YesNo
In the past 2 years, have you
31. Received any medication by injection to prevent HIV infection? (i.e., long-acting antiviral PrEP or PEP)
You may recall that earlier in the Donor History Questionnaire, prospective donors are asked if they have taken oral PrEP or PEP within the last 3 months. Note that this question pertains to injectable PrEP or PEP and comes with a much larger time window.
Injectable PrEP and PEP medication can significantly delay the detection of HIV via current laboratory testing methods, and the long-lasting presence of the medication itself in the blood can also interfere with testing, potentially producing false-negative results in infected donors. A longer deferral period is necessary to allow for adequate detection of infected persons. Prospective donors are deferred for 2 years following the date of their last medication injection for the prevention of HIV.
