Question #11: Oral HIV Prevention Medication

YesNo
In the past 3 months, have you
11. Taken any medication by mouth (oral) to prevent HIV infection? (i.e., PrEP or PEP)
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) oral medication for the prevention of HIV may delay laboratory detection of the virus in infected individuals and result in false negative results. While HIV prophylaxis medication is effective in preventing sexual transmission of HIV, PrEP and PEP medication do not completely eliminate the virus from the body, and transmission may still be possible via transfusion products. Donors who answer "yes" to this question are deferred for 3 months from the date of their last dose.
PrEP and PEP received via injection are addressed later in the DHQ.
