Alternative Methods for Identification: DNA Sequencing
DNA Sequencing
Identifies organisms by determining the precise order of nucleotides in the DNA.
The sequence is then compared to a database of known sequences that are characterized by specific organisms.
Commonly used genes for sequence identifications are 16S RNA, rpoB, and heat shot protein 65.
Even with commercially available methods, sequencing is a complex and often cost-prohibitive method that requires a high level of expertise.
