Alternative Methods for Identification: DNA Sequencing

DNA Sequencing
  • Identifies organisms by determining the precise order of nucleotides in the DNA.
  • The sequence is then compared to a database of known sequences that are characterized by specific organisms.
  • Commonly used genes for sequence identifications are 16S RNA, rpoB, and heat shot protein 65.
  • Even with commercially available methods, sequencing is a complex and often cost-prohibitive method that requires a high level of expertise.
