Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii is another unusual organism in the Corynebacterium genus that does not contain mycolic acid in the cell wall but is lipophilic.
C. kroppenstedtii has been implicated primarily in granulomatous mastitis and other breast infections. The reservoir for this species is unknown.
Colonies are non-hemolytic, non-pigmented small, smooth, and convex on blood agar. CAMP is negative. Isolates are positive for esculin hydrolysis with glucose and sucrose fermentation. This organism can also grow in 10% NaCl and can grow at 42ºC.
