When a chemical has multiple hazards, the hazards need to be prioritized to determine where to store the chemical safely. Flammability takes priority over other hazards. Areas where flammables are used and stored should have adequate ventilation to protect against fire. Oxidizers, such as peroxides, must be separated from flammables and stored in a cool, dry location.
- Chemicals that are flammable or combustible should be stored in a fire-resistant cabinet; only a minimal amount should be stored on open shelving in the technical work areas.
- Be conscientious about storing flammable and combustible chemicals far from sources of ignition.
- Conduct work involving flammable and combustible chemicals within a chemical fume hood if possible.
