Efficiency and Equity

Inefficiency wastes resources, resulting in rework which may lead to errors that affect patient care. Efficiency can be improved by automating repetitive processes. Efficiency can also be improved by limiting the amount of rework performed. This can be accomplished by addressing each situation as it arises.
Health care professionals should recognize that the health of the entire population can be improved if every patient is treated equally and provided with care without discrimination. The quality of care delivered to each individual should not vary due to personal characteristics such as gender, geographic location, and socioeconomic status.
