As stated previously, CD4, with co-factors CCR5 and CXCR4, is the target of the HIV virus. Glycoprotein 120 (gp120) found on the cap of a spike on the HIV envelope will bind to CD4. This process then exposes the stem of the spike, gp41, which pierces the host cell membrane.
