Probably the most important tip is to: Communicate!
Exercise respect, empathy, and constructive criticism when communicating with any vendor. Good communication during all phases of the vendor relationship will enhance outcomes and develop trust.
- Establish clear communication.
- Establish frequent communication.
Communication is required during the good times and not-so-good times. Be able to call, email, text, and/or fax your vendor with questions regarding shipments, timelines, and recalls. Ask for assistance from the experts on the vendor team when the laboratory requires extra assistance with items such as education, training, and follow-up quality assurance activities in case of a patient safety concern. A prime example is product recalls.
Touch base with the vendor's representative often. Do not wait until an emergent situation arises. Good patient care relies heavily on having the reagents, supplies, and processes in place to keep the laboratory open and functioning well.
