Air Exposure

Air exposure is an important factor in blood gas collection and analysis. An anaerobic environment should be maintained. Air bubbles should be avoided during collection and if introduced, removed immediately after collection. Syringes should be capped after collection.
The following parameters can be affected by exposure of the ABG sample to air:
  • pH falsely increased
  • pCO2 falsely decreased
  • pO2 falsely increased
