Phosphate System

The phosphate system (H2PO4-/HPO4-2) is another buffer in the body. It helps to minimize pH changes in the blood by excretion of daily H+ ion excess via the kidneys. Conversely, when the plasma pH is too alkaline, HCO3- is excreted into the urine and H+ into the plasma.
