Buffer

A buffer is the combination of a weak acid or weak base and its salt. It is a system that resists changes in pH.

The bicarbonate (HCO3-)/carbonic acid (H2CO3) system is an example of a buffer system. Other buffer systems include the phosphate system and plasma proteins.
