Tube Mixing

Most evacuated blood collection tubes require that most collection tubes be inverted 5-8 times end-over-end to fully mix the blood with either the anticoagulant or the clot-activating agents. (Check the tube manufacturer's recommendation.) A smooth, gentle end-over-end inversion is adequate to accomplish this task. Shaking or rapidly inverting the tubes must be avoided to prevent hemolysis.
