The Blood Collection Process

After the patient is properly identified and prepared, the blood collection process itself must be controlled to avoid introducing variability. Variables exist in the following aspects of collection:
  • Patient positioning
  • Site preparation
  • Needle gauge
  • Tourniquet
  • Tube mixing
  • Tube selection
  • Order of draw
  • Traumatic draw
  • Intravenous solutions
Always adhere to the laboratory's established policies and procedures for blood collection.
