Surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) is of the greatest importance and requires the cooperation of many health professionals including clinicians, public health professionals, and laboratorians. On the part of the laboratorian, successful surveillance includes laboratory reporting of VPDs as well as appropriate specimen collection, transport, and testing.
The CDC and state health laboratories can provide guidance on these various aspects. The following pages will discuss this in more detail.
