Mansonella ozzardi infections are usually asymptomatic, although fever, rashes, headache, edema, and lymphadenopathy may occur. Some infections have been linked to corneal lesions.
Other common names for the disease or infection are:
- Ozzardiasis
- Filaria ozzardi
- Microfilaria bolivarensis
- Tetrapetalonema ozzardi
Summary of the General Morphologic Characteristics of the Microfilariae:
Filarial Agent | Length | Width | Nuclear Column |
Mansonella ozzardi | Small (<200 μm in length)
| Small species tend to be about half the width of a red blood cell (RBC)
| Compact (dense) |
Headspace | Tail | Sheath on Giemsa |
Slightly longer than wide | Tapered and pointed tail, no nuclei | Never present |
