What is a Code of Conduct?

A code of conduct is defined as a set of rules written for employees of an organization. The rules inform employees of the company's expectations. The code of conduct goes well beyond the ethical code (or pledge) mentioned in the first section of this module.
A code of conduct in a health care facility focuses on patient welfare and safety. Workers and management are expected to follow the guidelines written in their facility's code of conduct. These expectations can be met if you:
  • Follow the policies and procedures that apply to your job.
  • Maintain professional competence.
  • Develop effective lines of communication with colleagues and with patients (if applicable).
  • Respond promptly to occurrences and document corrective actions.
  • Exhibit behaviors reflecting professional integrity.
The following pages will explore each of these items in greater detail.
