Other Treatments

In addition to the aforementioned drugs, other treatments or therapies may be performed to help control the behavioral symptoms of AD. One or more of the following may be employed:
  • Medications such as antidepressants may be prescribed to help control the behavioral symptoms associated with AD.
  • Creating a safe and supportive environment by adapting the living situations for the AD patient. Reinforcing and strengthening routine habits and minimizing memory-demanding tasks can make life easier for the AD patient.
  • Alternative medicine using herbal remedies, vitamins, and supplements that may support or improve cognitive health and even delay AD may be considered. The use of omega-3 fatty acids, the Ginkgo herb, and vitamin E have been used by AD patients. However, clinical studies to date have produced little evidence to support the effectiveness of alternative medicine treatments.
  • Lifestyle remedies to promote good overall health may help to support cognitive health. These lifestyle remedies include regular exercise and daily activities, maintaining healthy nutrition, and maintaining social interactions and activities.
