The CDC advises women who may want to prevent pregnancy to speak with their physician or healthcare provider about the best ways to prevent unintended pregnancy and to use an effective form of birth control. In addition, such women should follow the guidelines for the general population when it comes to protection from Zika infections. The CDC currently recommends that for the general population who develop symptoms of Zika virus infection and who live in or have recently traveled to an area with the presence of the Zika virus, the individual is advised to visit with their physician or other healthcare provider to discuss the possibility of ordering blood tests to identify the Zika virus or other similar viruses, like dengue or chikungunya.
