Distinguish Between Corrective Action and Preventive Action

The methods used during preventive and corrective actions may be very similar. However, it is important to understand the differences between the two processes and have an awareness of the implications involved when capturing information for each process.
Corrective action is a reaction to a problem that has occurred and been reported by either external or internal sources.
Preventive action is initiated to stop a potential problem from occurring. Preventive actions usually rely on monitoring controls that are incorporated as part of the QMS. For example, if an indicator outlined in the QMS suggests that a problem may develop, preventive action may be implemented to avert a negative situation.
