Purchasing Reagents

Discovering environmentally sustainable reagents is a bit more difficult. A brief list of reagents is available through the previously mentioned, Lab Conscious: https://www.labconscious.com/green-lab-supplies-and-lab-equipment-guide.13 However, many of these are applicable more to research or academic labs.
When it comes to reagents, one area to pursue is packaging (this can also apply to supplies). Purchasing supplies and reagents with eco-friendly or minimal packaging can be a good move. Consolidating or combining orders among the different lab departments can cut back on transportation and possibly packaging. Additionally, purchasing from local suppliers cuts back on transportation energy and costs.
Some reagents or media can be made in bulk rather than purchasing individually aliquoted reagents in their own container. Obviously, this method could require more hands-on work time which must be considered.
Another suggestion is substituting non-toxic reagents and chemicals when possible.
