The small bowel can become obstructed with thickened meconium in about 15% of newborns. A similar proportion of older children and adults also have bowel obstruction due to thickened stool. Some patients with CF have liver disease due to mucus and dehydrated bile, which block the bile ducts and cause hepatic inflammation.
