Fire prevention includes ongoing, consistent compliance with laboratory fire safety policies and procedures by all associates. These include:
- Storing flammable chemicals and gases properly
- Reading labels and the safety data sheet (SDS) for any flammable chemicals
- Properly labeling chemicals with obvious hazard warnings
- Minimizing quantities of flammable chemicals and gases
- Cleaning spills involving flammable chemicals immediately
- Keeping work areas clean and free of clutter
- Discarding and removing flammable waste promptly
- Keeping fire barriers in place (closed doors)
- Correcting fire hazards if possible or reporting to laboratory management
