There are many different chemicals in every area of the laboratory, from cleaning agents to the most toxic chemicals used in the Chemistry and Histology laboratories. Chemical hazards are substances that cause harm to people and animals.
Laboratory professionals need to know how to store and work with chemicals. Couriers may come into contact with chemicals as they walk through the laboratory or when they transport chemicals during their job. Refer to your institution's Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Chemicals can hurt us if we get them on our skin where they may be absorbed. Ingestion or inhalation of chemicals can also be very dangerous.
The key to chemical safety for couriers is to:
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Watch where you put your hands.
- Know where the drench shower and the eyewash stations are located and how to use them.
- Treat all chemicals with respect.
