Biohazards are blood, body fluids, and microorganisms (including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites) that may be a threat to human health. The term includes specimens and waste products.
As health care providers, we do not have the right to know which patient or specimen may contain a biohazard. Therefore, we must follow Standard Precautions and treat every patient and every specimen as though they are potentially infectious to protect ourselves from possible exposure.
When you see the biohazard symbol, you need to be aware of a possible biohazard.
