Researchers at the Iran University of Medical Sciences have shown that treatments with nanoparticles of zinc oxide are successful at inhibiting Influenza H1N1 in laboratory cell cultures. This research corresponds with previous research on zinc as an antiviral mineral. Multiple studies have shown, both in the laboratory and in direct patient care, that zinc can reduce the viral load and symptoms of a respiratory infection. Vitamin C and Vitamin D have both been shown in laboratory and clinical research to reduce the duration of Influenza.
The term nutraceuticals has been used to group various nutrients that are believed to have a health benefit. These can include minerals, vitamins, herbs, and plant extracts. Research suggests that the use of these can control RNA viruses, including Influenza and Coronavirus. Herbs that have also been shown to have documented activity against viruses include oregano, elderberry, licorice, astragalus, sage, basil, fennel, garlic, lemon balm, peppermint, rosemary, and echinacea. An in-depth analysis examining the multiple types of alternative treatments is beyond the scope of this session.
