Five to fifteen days after being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus, patients may present with fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and lethargy. Most cases of LACV occur in children and in about 50% of cases, patients have convulsions. Patients who develop severe neuroinvasive (about 25%) cases can have focal weakness or paralysis, but infections are rarely fatal (about 1%). Only a few patients do not recover fully. They may have recurrent seizures, paralysis, and cognitive problems that persist.
There is no specific treatment or vaccine.
