Dengue Case Study

The patient was a 61-year-old woman who had a sudden onset of left side weakness and unsteadiness while walking. Her laboratory reports were normal except for a mild leukopenia (3,500/mm3) and thrombocytopenia (70,000/mm3). A stroke was ruled out, but MRI demonstrated cerebral ischemia.
Dengue fever was diagnosed by RT-PCR. A capture ELISA was positive for dengue II virus and the titer increased four-fold three weeks later.
