Engineering controls isolate the worker from the hazard of exposure to BBP by physically changing an instrument or laboratory environment. Examples of engineering controls include:
- Bench top splash guards
- Biological safety cabinets (BSCs)
- Instrumentation with closed-tube sampling
- Needle safety devices (eg, self-sheathing needles)
- Plastic blood collection tubes
- Plastic capillary tubes
- Rigid sharps disposal containers
