Waste Handling: Disposal, Handling, and Transport

The Department of Transportation (DOT) classifies EVD as a class A infectious substance. Potentially contaminated laboratory waste must always be properly disposed of, sealed, and transported. If waste items are contaminated with or suspected of contamination with the Ebola virus, the waste must be in a manner that complies with the DOT’s Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR), 49 CFR, Parts 171-180.
Laboratory waste includes all items used during the handling or testing of specimens, including items such as used PPE and all materials used to clean spills. Each laboratory must comply with all local, state, and federal waste regulations. Laboratories can contact their state's medical waste program for guidance on the proper procedures.
