Human Papillomavirus

Human Papillomavirus

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a DNA virus that causes proliferation on epidermal and mucosal surfaces. The resulting lesions range from benign (warts) to malignant, especially in anogenital lesions. New studies have shown a correlation between HPV and throat cancers.
Mouse IgG1 monoclonal antibody clone K1H1. Heat-induced epitope retrieval (HIER) pretreatment using sodium citrate solution is required to demonstrate HPV in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections. It has been the author's experience that HPV antibodies generally work best in demonstrating simple benign warts caused by HPV. In situ hybridization (ISH) is the definitive method for characterizing HPV lesions.
