The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has set forth guidelines under which IHC and ISH testing in breast cancer must be conducted. The guidelines address quality assurance (QA) measures and recommend specific methodology to improve HER2 testing accuracy.
Recommendations throughout all phases of testing for all invasive breast cancer patients include:
- Pre-analytic handling guidelines
- Analytic use of standardized operating procedures
- Post-analytic standardized reporting elements for both HER2 IHC and FISH must be used
