The College of American Pathologists (CAP) has set forth guidelines for conducting IHC and ISH testing in breast cancer. The guidelines address quality assurance (QA) measures and recommend specific methodologies to improve HER2 testing accuracy.
Recommendations throughout all phases of testing for all invasive breast cancer patients include:
- Pre-analytic handling guidelines
- Analytic use of standardized operating procedures
- Post-analytic standardized reporting elements for both HER2 IHC and FISH must be used
