Some type of photographing system is required for FISH slides. It is essential to document what is seen on the slide at the time of enumeration because the slide will fade with time. It is therefore required that at least two images of the slide be taken to document the findings. Since these images are patient-related, it is further required that the data be backed up and archived.
Imaging systems are available that can enumerate the fluorescent signals in the cells. These instruments are gaining popularity as the amount of FISH that is performed for cancer therapeutics increases. However, an imaging system that enumerates the signals is NOT required.
