FISH detects genetic aberrations, and this technique is used to qualify patients for drug therapy.
For example, Herceptin® is a chemotherapy drug that is given to breast cancer patients if they have an amplification of the HER2/neu gene. Herceptin® binds to the HER2/neu receptor and causes the tumor cell to die.
