Possible Solutions to Productivity Down 20% in Blood Bank Department

Discover and discuss possible solutions. The team determined:
  • The lack of training of new staff was due to absences creating a staffing shortage that made less time for experienced staff to train new staff and locums.
  • The hope was that this would resolve as COVID sick leave decreased. In addition, a program to make sure all staff was encouraged to receive the latest COVID vaccinations available was implemented.
  • The scheduling person was instructed to put more experienced staff as shift supervisors whenever possible. The team hoped the increased sick leave and problems with project management would resolve once the COVID absences decreased.
  • A review of staffing during the various shifts was put in place to make sure the right number of staff with a mix of experienced, new hires, and locums were scheduled.
  • In addition, if staffing shortages were identified during certain shifts, the hiring of additional staff would occur.
