Wearing Double Gloves

Depending on a lab-specific risk assessment, two pairs of gloves may be used as an enhanced precaution. If two pairs are worn:
  • The cuff of the inner pair (the pair that is put on first) may go under the lab coat or gown cuff, with the outer pair of gloves going over the lab coat or gown cuffs. Or, both the inner and outer pair of gloves will overlap the lab coat or gown cuff, depending on lab-specific PPE procedures.
    • Note: If the inner and outer pair of gloves are different colors, it may be easier to notice small tears or rips in the gloves.
  • When doffing, the outer pair of gloves is typically removed first. Then, the rest of the PPE is doffed, and the inner pair of gloves is doffed last.
