Gowns will typically be a ‘solid impermeable front’ with a tie/string closure around the back and/or neck or on the side/front and have elasticized cuffs. Gowns also:
- Offer a broad barrier and increased protection from splashes and are commonly used in higher-risk work settings (e.g., when there is a higher risk of splashes)
- Can be worn on top of clothing or a lab coat
- Can be made of disposable or reusable material, sometimes called ‘isolation gowns’
When choosing a gown, look for product labeling that describes the intended use with the desired level of protection based on the determined risk levels.
