Differential

The differential was as follows:
Cell TypePatient ResultsReference Range
Blasts5 0
Promyelocytes0 0
Myelocytes1 0
Metamyelocytes0 0
Bands4 2–6
Neutrophils63 5–70
Eosinophils1 0–4
Basophils0 0–2
Lymphocytes22 20–44
Monocytes4 2–9
Notes on the differential:
  • Occasional hypogranulation of the neutrophils
  • A few neutrophils with pseudo-Pelger-Huët
  • Macrocytosis
  • Anisocytosis
  • Poikilocytosis
  • Occasional basophilic stippling
The image to the right shows a hypogranular neutrophil with a pseudo-Pelger-Huët nucleus (bi-lobed nucleus). Both of these cell abnormal white blood cell findings can be seen in an MDS called MDS-EB2, which will be discussed on the next pages.
