Introducing molecular methods into a clinical microbiology laboratory is not a process without challenges. Some of these may include:
- Space requirements for both workflow and instrumentation
- Additional electrical requirements (sometimes multiple 220v with high amperage)
- Identifying separate areas for critical aspects of the molecular process
- Familiarizing staff with new workflow requirements
- Instilling potentially new skill sets
- Cost of equipment and reagents
Space requirements
Introducing molecular methods will necessarily entail the introduction of new equipment. Space is at a premium in many laboratories, and identifying space for new and additional equipment can be challenging. Some platforms are quite large, while others have a significantly smaller footprint. The necessary separation of specific activities in the workflow will also impact space planning.
