Role of Reference and National Laboratories Within the Laboratory Response Network (LRN)

A reference laboratory within the LRN performs tests to detect and confirm (rule in) the presence of a threat agent. These laboratories ensure a timely local response during a terrorist incident. Rather than relying on confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) laboratories, reference laboratories can produce conclusive results, allowing local authorities to respond quickly to emergencies.
A national laboratory is at the highest level within the LRN. Examples include those operated by the CDC, the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, and the Naval Medical Research Center. These laboratories have unique resources to handle highly infectious agents and the ability to identify specific agent strains.
