Targeted Testing: Who Should be Tested for TB Infection?

According to CDC, two main groups of persons are at risk for TB infection
Group 1 - People who are at high risk for exposure to or infection to Mycobacterium tuberculosis:
  • Close contacts with people known or presumed to have infectious TB disease
  • Immigrants from areas with a high burden of disease
  • Residents and employees of high-risk congregate settings (eg., homeless shelters, health care facilities/nursing homes, correctional facilities)
  • Employment - exposure follow-up in high-risk congregate settings, health care workers serving patients with TB disease
  • Populations defined locally as having an increased incidence of LTBI or TB disease, including medically underserved or low-income, or people who abuse drugs or alcohol
  • Infants, children, and adolescents exposed to adults who are at increased risk (for LTBI or TB disease)
