Dark Precipitate on the Slide

Suppose the hematoxylin is used beyond its expiration date or improperly stored (excessive heating or freezing). In that case, it will show signs of deterioration in the form of black precipitate scattered throughout the section.
Proper storage and attention to expiration dates will prevent this problem. Manufacturers of hematoxylin provide guidelines for storage requirements and shelf-life.
